Prologue
Katie
"Stop looking so worried. Like I said earlier, someone will meet you at the other end and swap rucksacks with you." Fazer straightened the collars on my jacket before stepping back to assess me.
"Grab yourself a coffee and simply wait for the next train to bring you back to London. It's a simple job babe and you're doing me a huge favour."
Fazer leaned closer to place a lingering kiss on my lips. He had the ability to make my knees weak by the simplest of touches. I breathed in his scent and closed my eyes savouring his touch. We had only been seeing each other for a couple of months but he was my everything. He made me feel wanted and I liked the feelings he provoked. He was a member of the Dyers and although young, he was working his way through the ranks already. People respected him and therefore when I was with him, people looked favourably towards me. I wanted for nothing including love and that was exactly what I needed at this moment in time.
My family had pushed me aside lately. My brother had recently joined the family business and there wasn't room for a thirteen year old girl hanging around. Mum used to remind me that little girls should be seen and not heard but that wasn't for me. I had a voice and it was Fazer who chose to listen but this time I would leave and not return.
Fazer pulled away putting some space between us. I opened my eyes and was greeted with a wide smile. "Come on baby, let's get you on that train." He was always so thoughtful and caring towards me, even now standing on the platform. He knew that I was worried about the delivery but he had reassured me. He couldn't make the delivery himself because of work commitments and I wanted to be the perfect girlfriend and help him as much as possible. We had discussed moving in with each other. I knew how expensive this would be and I didn't want to get in the way of his work so if I could help in any way, then I would.
Fazer wrapped an arm firmly around my shoulder and directed me towards the carriage doors that had just opened.
"I'll see you later on this afternoon," he whispered before placing a chaste kiss on my temple. I moved slowly from his grasp and stepped back towards the train.
I placed both hands on the straps of the rucksack firmly and gave him the brightest smile that I could muster although my stomach twisted with anxiety.
"Remember to only use that mobile in an emergency." Fazer nodded towards the front pocket of my jacket where he had placed it earlier.
I patted it and nodded, letting him know that I understood his instructions. Fazer had been very clear of what I needed to do and I didn't want to let him down. He had also given me £10 so I could buy myself some lunch, another gesture of his love towards me.
"Go on, get on before it leaves you behind."
I stepped on to the train before turning to look at him. "Love you," I stated shyly.
Fazer gave me a wink as the doors shut leaving me feeling a little rejected. I understood that we were in a public place but he wasn't usually quiet regarding his feelings towards me.
I turned and slowly walked through the carriage looking for an available seat. It was after 9.00am so there weren't many commuters as they were already at work. I smiled as I passed seated passengers, a little unsure of my surroundings until I found an available chair. I removed the rucksack from my back and placed it on the seat before I sat beside it closest to the window. I glanced around the carriage getting my bearing and checking out my surroundings before I removed my jacket and placed it over my lap. The journey would be over an hour so I needed to get comfortable although there was no way that I could relax with the butterflies in my stomach. I reached out and grabbed the rucksack before placing it on the floor between my feet. That way I could keep it secure and prevent it from falling over. The bag was heavy, I hadn't asked what was inside but I wasn't stupid. I knew that Fazer and his friends delivered drugs, that's why they had nice clothes and plenty of money. Fazer had made it clear that this was a one off which had put my mind at rest but I wanted to be liked by the Dyers, loved even and if this meant helping him out from time to time then that's what I would do. I snuggled down into the chair, looking out of the window and watching the houses pass me by to try to stop myself from over thinking.
The announcement pulled me from my thoughts as it stated our arrival at Ipswich. It didn't take as long as I had expected so I was unprepared. I quickly gathered my jacket and rucksack before standing, panicking that I may miss the stop. A few other passengers stood so I allowed them to move closer to the doors while I gathered my thoughts and waited for the train to stop.
As I stepped from the carriage, I took in my surroundings and looked to see whether I recognised anyone. Everyone was rushing towards the exit, clearing the platform and there was no one around apart from a boy of similar age sitting on a bench further down the platform. I glanced around again, checking to see whether there was anyone else but he was now the only person in my vicinity.
I strolled uncomfortably towards the young boy hoping that he would give me some type of sign that it was him, I was supposed to be meeting. As I neared, I slowed my pace and I must have interrupted him because he looked up from his mobile and smiled.
I let out a loud sigh feeling relieved that I had finally made contact. This could now be a smooth transaction and I could be on my way back home shortly. I sat beside him and placed the rucksack on the ground between my feet but without warning, the boy snatched the rucksack and took off down the platform. It took me a few seconds for the realisation to sink in but when it did, I jumped from the bench and took chase. He ran down a set of stairs into the main train station and I was now close behind him. I flung my arms out in front of me, hoping to grab the rucksack he
had slung over his shoulder but as soon as my fingertips touched the material, it was quickly out of my reach. The boy leapt over the turnstiles and I followed in hot pursuit but he was able to get over it quicker. I dropped my jacket on the ground and bent to pick it up before following the boy out onto the street. As I exited the train station I noticed that the boy was halfway up the hill and too far for me to catch.
"Fuck!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. A few people turned to face me but I didn't care, I was trying to rationalise what I was going to do. I placed my palm on my forehead and banged it several times, trying to think as people brushed past me trying to get out of the train station. It was only then that I realised that I was standing in the doorway and drawing unwanted attention to myself.
I stepped aside and grabbed for the mobile phone that I had been given, knowing that I needed to contact Fazer and inform him of what had just happened. He said it was only to be used in an emergency and I think this would constitute as that.
"Yep," a voice answered.
"Erm...can I speak to Fazer?" I asked hearing the panic in my voice.
"Nope, what's up?"
I let out a loud sigh, "Someone has stolen my bag, and I don't know what to do." I paced up and down the street not moving too far from the train station, as I didn't know the area. There was a long pause and I was about to ask whether he had heard me when he responded.
"Get on the next train home."
"Shouldn't you send someone up here to try and find the boy who stole the bag?" Before I had finished the sentence, the line had gone dead. I looked at the mobile willing it to be a bad signal but there wasn't, he had hung up on me.
"You've fucking gone and done it this time Kate." I stated aloud, totally dejected. I placed the mobile into my jean pocket and wrapped my jacket around my waist knowing that I needed to head back into the train station and head to London empty handed.
Placing my hands into my pockets, I turned and made my way towards the station.
As I placed my ticket in the turnstile, I heard the train. My heart quickened as I ran up the steps as fast as my feet would take me hoping that I wouldn't miss it. I moved hastily down the platform, managing to squeeze through the gap in the door before they closed fully.
I threw myself onto the nearest available chair and shook my head through frustration. I didn't know how Fazer was going to take the news. He had always been caring towards me, a little possessive and possibly bossy at times but I had never felt uncomfortable in his presence. I racked my brains, thinking of ways that I could repay him. Whatever was in that rucksack would've been expensive but as for how much, I wouldn't know. I had around £150 in my bank account and I could possibly ask my brother for help although he would want to know details. He was earning good money now training to be a mechanic at the family business so I knew that he would have some money put aside.
I removed the phone from my pocket and hovered my thumbs over the keypad deciding whether to call him or not but remembered Fazer being quite clear that I was only to use the mobile in an emergency.
I hadn't realised that tears were streaming from my eyes until a tissue was placed onto my lap. I looked up from the mobile to a welcoming smile from an elderly woman.
I forced a smile and picked up the tissue, "Thank you."
"Do you need anything else sweetie?" she asked caringly.
I shook my head, "No I'm good but thank you." I was thankful and used the tissue to wipe my cheeks.
The elderly woman patted my shoulder gently before returning to her seat. I dropped my eyes again and tucked the tissue into the cuff of my jumper just in case I needed it again before leaning my head on the window of the moving train. I would be home in just over an hour and I dreaded the thought of seeing the disappointment on Fazer's face.
The announcement of our arrival at Stratford startled me. I quickly tucked the mobile that I was holding into my jean pocket as I stood and straightened my clothes before stretching for the closest bar to steady myself. I waited for the doors to open and felt the cold air hit me as it circulated around my body. I shivered as I removed my jacket from around my waist and placed it over my shoulders as I stepped from the train onto the platform.
My heart skipped a beat as I made eye contact with Fazer. His unreadable expression unnerved me but I knew I had to face him and try to explain.
"I'm sorry, the boy just grabbed the bag and took off. I tried to chase after him but he was too fast." I heard the pleading in my voice for him to believe and possibly forgive me.
Fazer grabbed me by the elbow and steered me in the direction of the exit without saying a word.
"I could possibly speak to my brother, maybe he could give me some money to replace what I lost." I glanced in his direction but he didn't make eye contact.
"I'm really sorry." I walked beside Fazer, quickening my pace to keep up with him as he ignored me further.
The feeling of helplessness hit me. If Fazer cast me aside and finished our relationship, I wouldn't have anyone. I needed to make this right, I needed to do whatever was asked of me in order to make this situation better and for him to be able to trust me again.
"Mr Fox, good afternoon I'm PC Dixon from Stratford Police Station. We believe that you may be carrying a class A drug. We will now search you, if you refuse we will take you to Stratford Police Station. Would you kindly place your hands onto the wall and spread your legs."
Fazer dropped his hold, "Do I have much choice?"
The officer shook his head and Fazer obliged by turning around and doing as he was told. The use of his surname by the officer made me curious because he was obviously well known to the police.
Fazer stood still and allowed the officer to pat him down. "You won't find anything on me," he spat clearly annoyed. Fazer was cocky, one of the things that attracted me to him in the first place but he shouldn't be rude to an officer. I was many things but rude wasn't one of them, I was brought up to be respectful to my elders.
I clasped my hands together firmly in front of me unsure of what to do and quickly glanced at the officer who had stepped back.
"Same for you young lady, hands on the wall and spread your legs."
I looked at her wide eyed before turning and doing exactly as I was told. I had never been in trouble with the police before and didn't intend to start now.
"Have you got anything sharp in your pockets that I need to know about before I conduct the search?" she asked firmly.
I shook my head.
"What's your name?" she asked patting down my arms.
"Katie Groves."
"Okay and have you ever been in trouble with the police before?"
"Never," I responded firmly.
"And how old are you Katie?"
"I'm sixteen," I lied. I knew if they did some digging they would find out the truth but if I had told them that I was thirteen, they may have called my dad or even brother and I didn't want them involved if I could help it.
"Well you seem like a nice girl, what are you doing with Joel?" The officer had now moved to my legs.
Fazer turned his head towards us, "That's none of your business and I actually take offence to your comment."
"I wasn't talking to you Joel, I was talking to Katie." She returned her attention to me. "What are you doing with Joel?" she asked once again.
"We are friends. He's just dropping me back home." I stuttered not sure of what to say.
The officer worked her way back up my leg and stood finishing her search.
"Okay you're both free to go." Both officers stepped back giving us the room to move from the wall.
"As I said, we've got nothing of interest on us." Fazer straightened his clothes, clearly annoyed by the stop and search and grabbed my wrist firmly, pulling me close to his side as he stomped towards his parked car.
He didn't say a word as we both got into the vehicle. I knew that I was in a lot of trouble so I decided to keep my mouth shut and chose to look out of the window instead. Wi
th drum and bass pumping loudly in my ears, I managed to drift away into a world of make believe, where life was good. I would have a family that had time for me so I didn't have to run away and live a life that I knew would lead me down the wrong path. I let out a small sigh as I thought about what life was and could be.
My brother, father and uncle were all involved in the family business so I had a lot of time on my hands to amuse myself. I stayed out late and sometimes I didn't come home at all because no boundaries were put in place and I was able to do what I wanted, when I wanted. It was during this time that I met Fazer.
I went to a party at the Ridgeway. As soon as I walked into the house, my eyes met his. Fazer was tall, dark and certainly handsome. He was in the thick of things, deep in conversation but nodded, greeting me in a cool manner. His friends turned, following his eye line and I felt exposed by their attention but also flattered that he had made a point of communicating with me.
Since that day, three months had passed and now Fazer was a regular part of my life. He had expressed his love soon after that initial meeting and he was able to make me feel special, like I was the only girl in the world. In return, I had modelled myself into the perfect girlfriend, doing everything that he asked of me. I had recently left home, Fazer had his own flat so there was no point me travelling back and forth on the train to get home each evening as it was easier for me to stay with him. He had promised that we would soon move and get a place that we had chosen together. The downside of me moving in with him though, meant that I was now isolated from my friends and family. I spent most of my days with Fazer and if he were out on business, I would stay home to cook and clean the flat. However, I had now chosen this life. When I made the decision to leave, no one came looking for me. Fazer had said that they were probably too busy with their own lives and now I had to look after myself. Fazer was now my family and I loved him very much so.
"We're here Kate."
I glanced in his direction looking for some type of connection or emotion but he didn't show anything. He went through the motions of turning off the engine and releasing his seatbelt before exiting the vehicle, all without even a glance in my direction.
